Shape Spin: a quick mental rotation game
Shape Spin is a mental rotation game built around one question: is shape B simply shape A spun around, or is it a mirror image? You get 60 seconds to answer as many pairs as you can. After every answer, B spins back onto A so you can see exactly why you were right or wrong.

How to play
- Hit Start; a short countdown leads into the first pair.
- Look at the two block shapes, A on the left and B on the right.
- Tap Turned if B is A rotated, or Mirrored if B is A flipped; on a keyboard use the left and right arrow keys.
- Watch B rotate back onto A, then answer the next pair.
- Keep going until the timer runs out and read your score, accuracy, average answer time and top level.
What it exercises
Every pair asks you to turn a shape in your head, which is exactly what psychologists call mental rotation.
Spatial reasoning
You picture a shape of five, six or seven blocks turning a quarter, half or three-quarter turn and compare it with what is in front of you.
Telling left from right
A mirror image looks almost the same as a rotation, so the game makes you check handedness: which side the bump or the tail sits on.
Speed under a clock
Faster correct answers earn a bigger bonus, so you learn to trust a quick, careful look instead of second-guessing every pair.
Tips
- Pick one distinctive block, such as the end of a long arm, and track where it lands in B.
- When a gold block appears in both shapes, use it as your anchor; it shows up on levels 4 and 5 to help with bigger shapes.
- Count how far B looks turned. If no quarter, half or three-quarter turn lines it up, it must be mirrored.
- Accuracy matters more than raw speed early on, because each correct answer also feeds your streak bonus.
- Every three correct answers move you up a level; halfway through the run the game jumps to at least level 4 anyway, so expect the shapes to grow.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a mental rotation test online for free here?
Shape Spin is a free game rather than a formal test, but it uses the same kind of task. Open it in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer and start a 60-second run; there are no ads and nothing to install.
What does a mental rotation example look like in this game?
You might see an F-shaped piece of five blocks as A, and as B the same piece turned a quarter to the right. That pair is Turned. If B is that piece flipped like a reflection, even when also rotated, the answer is Mirrored.
Is this good mental rotation test practice?
It gives you a lot of repetitions of the core skill: dozens of shape pairs per minute, each followed by an animation that shows the real turn or flip. It does not predict or grade a formal test result.
How is a spatial rotation game like this scored?
A correct answer earns base points that grow with the level, a speed bonus of up to 50 points when you answer within about five seconds, and a streak bonus. A wrong answer earns nothing and resets the streak.
How many levels are there?
Eight. Shapes start at five blocks with quarter turns and grow to seven blocks with half and three-quarter turns, so later pairs need a longer look.
