Switcheroo: a task switching game where the rule keeps flipping
Switcheroo is a fast task switching game: one card appears, and a banner tells you whether to answer by its shape or its color. Just when you settle in, the rule flips, and halfway through the minute a third rule, COUNT, joins the mix. Every run lasts 60 seconds and ends with your accuracy, reaction time and a personal switch cost.

How to play
- Press Start and watch the 3-2-1 countdown; the first rule is shown before the clock runs.
- Read the rule banner: SHAPE, COLOR or COUNT.
- Tap the answer button that matches the card under that rule: circle, triangle or square; blue, magenta or gold; or 1, 2 or 3 copies.
- Keep answering until the 60 seconds are up, then read your summary.
What it exercises
The card never asks a hard question. The challenge is answering the right question at the right moment.
Cognitive flexibility
Each flip asks you to drop the rule you were just using and pick up another one, often after only two or three cards.
Selective attention
A blue triangle has a shape and a color at the same time. You have to look at the one feature that counts and ignore the other.
Speed under pressure
Streaks multiply your points, so there is a constant pull between answering quickly and answering correctly.
Tips
- Glance at the rule banner before every answer, not just when you notice a change. Flips come without warning.
- Early in a run the rule holds for four to six cards; in the last third it can change after two, so stay alert near the end.
- A streak pays double after 3 correct answers, triple after 6 and four times after 10. One wrong tap resets it, so accuracy is worth more than raw speed.
- When COUNT appears at the 30-second mark, ignore shape and color completely and just count the copies.
- On a keyboard, keys 1, 2 and 3 answer faster than a mouse.
Frequently asked questions
What is a task switching game?
It is a rule switching game: the same picture must be judged by different rules, and the rule changes as you play. In Switcheroo you sort one card at a time by shape, color or number of copies, depending on the banner.
What is switch cost and how is it measured here?
Switch cost is how much slower you answer right after the rule changes. Switcheroo compares your average time on correct answers just after a flip with your time on cards where the rule stayed the same, and shows the gap in milliseconds. Lower is better, and a negative number means you were just as quick after a flip.
Is this a good task switching exercise for adults?
It is a short, playful way to practise shifting between rules under time pressure. A minute a day is enough to see your score and switch cost move. We describe it as a mental workout, not a treatment or a test.
What score counts as good in Switcheroo?
The summary gives a rating: under 300 points is Warming up, 300 is Steady switcher, 700 is Flexible mind and 1,200 or more is Switch master. Your best score is kept while the page stays open.
Is there a cognitive flexibility game I can play online for free?
Switcheroo is one. It is free, ad-free and opens straight in a browser on a phone, tablet or desktop, with no account and nothing to install.
